Are you self-conscious about the gaps in your smile? Why not restore your smile with dental implants? Pasadena, CA, dentist Dr. Jerry Johnson explains how implants can improve your smile.
Implants replace your roots
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are attached to dental crowns to create new teeth. Just like your natural roots, your replacement roots become firmly attached to your jawbone. Titanium, the metal used in dental implants, bonds to your jawbone, ensuring that your new root won't slip or slide no matter what you eat. Dental implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth, thanks to dental bridges and implant-supported dentures.
Creating a new tooth involves a three-step process
Because it takes a few months for your implant to bond to your jawbone, the implant process usually requires a few dental visits. The first step in the process involves an oral surgical procedure to create an opening in your jawbone for the implant.
After your mouth heals and the implant bonds to your jawbone, a small screw will be added to the top of the implant. The screw, called an abutment, will eventually attach the dental crown to the implant. During this step, an impression of your mouth will be taken and will be used to create your new crown. When the crown is ready in just a few weeks, it will be connected to the implant, completing the process.
