What To Do When You Have a Toothache

Do you have a painful tooth? Your family dentist in Pasadena, CA, Dr. Jerry Johnson, offers treatments that will ease your toothache pain.

Treating tooth pain at home

A few home care treatments can help you manage the pain of a toothache until you can see the dentist. If you have a toothache, you may want to:

  • Use an Ice Pack: Ice numbs your jaw and also reduces inflammation and swelling. Keep an ice pack on your face for no longer than 20 minutes. Take a 20-minute break before reapplying ice.
  • Take a Pain Reliever: Over-the-counter pain medications may help dull your pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, are good choices because they ease both pain and swelling. If you can't take NSAIDs, acetaminophen may help reduce pain.
  • Rinse with Saltwater or Hydrogen Peroxide: Rinsing your mouth with a saltwater or hydrogen peroxide-and-water solution may temporarily decrease pain and inflammation.
  • Apply Oil of Clove: Clove oil has natural anesthetic properties that may reduce toothache pain. Put a few drops of the oil on a cotton swab or piece of cotton and apply to the gum around your tooth.
  • Try Numbing Gel: An oral numbing gel is another good solution if your tooth hurts.

How your dentist treats toothaches

During your visit to the Pasadena dental office, X-rays or other tests may be needed to locate the source of your tooth pain. The decayed material will be removed and replaced with a filling if a cavity is responsible for your pain. If you have a large filling, you may also need a dental crown to strengthen your tooth. Crowns, also called caps, are hollow restorations that slip over the top of teeth.

If an infection or inflammation in your tooth pulp is the cause of your pain, you'll need a root canal to ease your pain and save your tooth. Root canals involve removing the pulp and replacing it with a rubber-based filling.

Sometimes tooth pain is caused by a crack in a tooth. Adding a crown to the tooth ends your pain and reduces the risk that the tooth will break.

Tooth pain doesn't always mean that you have a problem with a tooth. In fact, you might have a toothache if you have a sinus infection or gum disease. Once these issues are treated, your pain will go away.

Patient Reviews

Dr. Johnson and his staff worked with me when I had a recent dental emergency. He was able to work me into his schedule and diagnose my cracked tooth and provide temporary relief from the pain. I am extremely happy with my new crown and feel that Dr. Johnson did an amazing job.  January 25th, 2023

Dr. Johnson is a high-quality dentist who takes the time to explain any procedure you need to have done, which greatly puts you at ease. I recently broke off a piece of one of my back molars while eating at a restaurant. I called his office and Dr. Johnson was able to see me right away and fit me in to his schedule. I ended up needing a crown and couldn't be happier with the results. Thank you, Dr. Johnson!     December 4th, 2018

Best Dentist In The World!!!!!! My wife has been going to Dr. Johnson for quite some time now and she introduced me to him about 12 years ago. I have never felt so comfortable with a dentist as I have with Dr. Johnson. I have had a lot of work done by Dr. Johnson and have never felt any pain... AT ALL! If you are afraid of going to the dentist because of the pain, you need not fear Dr. Johnson. He is easy going and patient and does not try to sell you anything you don't need. Another thing that makes his office great is, he is prompt. If your appointment is at 2, then you are in your chair and being worked on at 2. He doesn't over book, which speaks volumes about his care for his patients.

best.dentist.ever. Jerry Johnson is the best dentist I've ever been to. I used to go to Dental Plus in Pasadena, and although their dentists were very competent, they were always trying to get me to do what I thought were unnecessary procedures (like veneers I didn't want or need). Jerry is the exact opposite of this. He's very laid-back, knowledgeable, and never tries to rip you off. His staff are friendly, polite, and intelligent. I think he already has plenty of patients, but I'd strongly recommend him if you're looking for a dentist in the Pasadena area.
