Do you have a painful tooth? Your family dentist in Pasadena, CA, Dr. Jerry Johnson, offers treatments that will ease your toothache pain.

Treating tooth pain at home

A few home care treatments can help you manage the pain of a toothache until you can see the dentist. If you have a toothache, you may want to:

  • Use an Ice Pack: Ice numbs your jaw and also reduces inflammation and swelling. Keep an ice pack on your face for no longer than 20 minutes. Take a 20-minute break before reapplying ice.
  • Take a Pain Reliever: Over-the-counter pain medications may help dull your pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, are good choices because they ease both pain and swelling. If you can't take NSAIDs, acetaminophen may help reduce pain.
  • Rinse with Saltwater or Hydrogen Peroxide: Rinsing your mouth with a saltwater or hydrogen peroxide-and-water solution may temporarily decrease pain and inflammation.
  • Apply Oil of Clove: Clove oil has natural anesthetic properties that may reduce toothache pain. Put a few drops of the oil on a cotton swab or piece of cotton and apply to the gum around your tooth.
  • Try Numbing Gel: An oral numbing gel is another good solution if your tooth hurts.

How your dentist treats toothaches

During your visit to the Pasadena dental office, X-rays or other tests may be needed to locate the source of your tooth pain. The decayed material will be removed and replaced with a filling if a cavity is responsible for your pain. If you have a large filling, you may also need a dental crown to strengthen your tooth. Crowns, also called caps, are hollow restorations that slip over the top of teeth.

If an infection or inflammation in your tooth pulp is the cause of your pain, you'll need a root canal to ease your pain and save your tooth. Root canals involve removing the pulp and replacing it with a rubber-based filling.

Sometimes tooth pain is caused by a crack in a tooth. Adding a crown to the tooth ends your pain and reduces the risk that the tooth will break.

Tooth pain doesn't always mean that you have a problem with a tooth. In fact, you might have a toothache if you have a sinus infection or gum disease. Once these issues are treated, your pain will go away.
