More than 45% of adults over the age of 30 have chronic periodontitis in the USA, according to the American Dental Association. Periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, which is why you need to visit Dr. Jerry Johnson for your bi-annual dental checkup in Pasadena, CA.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal disease, gum disease, is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that contains bacteria. When teeth aren't thoroughly brushed, the buildup of plaque on teeth becomes hard tartar and bacteria start breaking down enamel and spreading to deeper layers, as well as your gums.

Early Signs of Gum Disease

When plaque continues to buildup, it turns into something called tartar, or calculus. This will likely cause swelling and gums bleeding easily while brushing them. Other early signs or symptoms of gum disease that indicate you need immediate attention from your dentist include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Tender and swollen gums that bleed easily
  • Loose teeth and pain while chewing
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

Other reasons you may develop gum disease is because of any of the following: crooked teeth that can't be cleaned properly, pregnancy, diabetes, smoking, and chewing tobacco, medications, and genetics.

  1. You should have an oral and dental examination at your Pasadena dentist's office every six months.
  2. Maintain a healthy oral habit: brush your teeth twice a day, after you eat breakfast and before you go to bed with a soft-bristled toothbrush; and floss daily before going to bed to remove food debris.
  3. Avoid eating sugary foods, like sodas and candy.
  4. Resort to a healthier diet, like apples and carrots, which help scrape off the tartar from the surface of your teeth.
  5. Drink water to wash away food particles.
